fake-hawk fade with Purple Highlights

Faux-hawk fade with purple highlights

Q&A session with style creator Mahri Jones

Owner+Hair Maven @ Parlor Salon in Richmond, VA

What do you think of this style and what’s the most appealing thing about it?

It’s a punk-influenced, faded and disjointed faux-hawk! I am awestruck by how strong and bold it is, but it keeps its softness around the edges. My cutting style of late was inspired by strong lines and subtle details. I love blurring the distinction of “masculine” as well as “feminine”.

What products do you suggest to create and sustain this style?

Before applying any other product, I ALWAYS recommend a color protector and heat that provides moisture. My personal favorite is Unite’s Seven Seconds Detangler. Following that, I apply products to boost the root and provide hold from the root, like the Unite Expanda Volume (adding in Expanda Dust to give hair with finer texture that requires more lift). It is then recommended to use pomades to layer out into the desired shape. At the moment, I’m enjoying a mixture with R+Co’s Badlands and Continental. Make sure you finish with a powerful hold hairspray (I make use of Vicious from R+Co) and you’re good to go!

Who is the type of person this look be most appropriate for?

This style is perfect designed for the creative individual who is confident about their style. Someone who wants to stand out without appearing like an adolescent. Someone who has a story to relate.

What’s your most effective advice to someone who’s thinking about this style?

Begin slow and establish your own rules. If you’re sure you’re the kind of person who does not handle change well Don’t jump into a look similar to this! Begin with a shorter fade before moving towards a more streamlined fade and finally, you can start playing with the shapes. My inspiration comes from the contours and the form of the head.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

I didn’t apply the color, however should I have I would suggest using an anti-color protectant as well as a colored conditioner (made by your professional stylist or colorist) to ensure the color throughout appointments.
